The use of water irrigation produces externalities both positive and negative. One of the problems related to irrigation is the salinization of groundwater caused by the non-sustainable use of this resource. The aim of the research is to evaluate the economics loss of benefits due to the overuse of groundwater in a Mediterranean Area (the province of Foggia, in southern Italy). The value of the externality is measured in term of the diffe’rence of the gross margins referred to sustainable water management and the overuse of groundwater. The analysis was developed through a Mathematics Programming model. According to our findings the cost of externality is quite relevant and could be used as a term of reference to introduce an eventual environmental tax.
