Reconsideration of Hesychius’ lemma π 1 Hansen = fr. 2 Kassel - Austin of Cratinus the Younger. The uncertain name of the Egyptian God †Σόχαρ†, attested in the codex Marcianus (Gr. Z. 662 = 851), was emended by Meineke as Σωχάρης, which is a well-attested Attic name. However, Σωχάρης seems to be «a spourious classic form» for the name of the Egyptian God mentioned by Cratinus. More likely, in the original source of Hesychius, this name might have been written Σoκαρ, which reminds us of the Egyptian consonantic transcription Skr. Abstract

Key-words: Pollux, Cratinus Iunior, Greek Lexicography, Greek Comedy.
