We read with great interest the recent article by Small and colleagues, 1 which determined the effects of a 14-day healthy longevity lifestyle program on cognition and cerebral metabolism in people with mild age-related memory complaints. Cardiovascular conditioning exercises and brief relaxation exercises designed to lower stress are recommended each day. Suggested shopping lists and menus guide subjects to follow a healthy diet plan, including five daily meals emphasizing antioxidant fruits and vegetables, n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), and low glycemic index carbohydrates. Subjects in the intervention group objectively demonstrated greater word fluency and a 5% decrease in activity in the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex at [fluorine-18]fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography scans in comparison of the control subjects.
