L’Unione Europea di fronte alla crisi groenlandese

This article examines the European Union’s response to the Greenland crisis, which was triggered in January 2026 by the Trump administration’s renewed and increasingly aggressive demands to acquire or annex the island. It analyses the two main categories of threats posed by the United States: military annexation and economic coercion through tariffs. The article concludes that the EU lacks the military competence to defend a Member State’s territory under current Treaty provisions, while noting the theoretical applicability of the mutual defence clause (Art. 42(7) TEU), though exclusively on the part of the Member States themselves. In the trade domain, the EU demonstrated greater effectiveness by leveraging existing rebalancing measures and the suspension of the Turnberry deal legislative process as instruments of passive pressure. Ultimately, the article emphasises the pressing necessity for enhanced strategic autonomy in a progressively adversarial global landscape.
