The article investigates the position of the Latin writer Columella regarding the need for a solid education in the field of agriculture, focusing on the fundamental passages of his praefatio to the first book of De re rustica. The thesis supported by the agronomist, which recovers what was stated on the superiority of agricultural sciences by the most famous Latin authors of agronomic treatises, finds resonance, centuries later, in Renaissance treatises such as Dello Specchio di Scientia Universale, a work by the Bolognese writer Leonardo Fioravanti.
