Abstract · Figurative Memories of Dante’s ‘Visible Speech’ : Specialized Word Choice in Purg. 10.94-95, Purg. 11.94-95 (and in Par. 17.52-54) · Determining just what “Dante’s figurative memories” are, that is, “which works of art Dante knew”, can be a difficult puzzle to solve and, due to some general cultural implications, a real enigma that goes beyond the boundaries of scholarly specialization. Art historians’ reflections on Dante’s relationship with the visual arts are divided into two main tracks : either ‘the arts in Dante’, i.e., ‘Dante in front of the arts’, or ‘Dante in art’, i.e., ‘the arts in front of Dante’. This careful investigation into Dante’s lexical choices (nouns, adjectives, verbal forms) alongside their possible relationships to the technical lexicon of the visual arts could well be fertile ground for improving our understanding of certain passages.
