The route of the via Appia between Irpinia and Brindisi is still problematic. This paper presents the reconstruction of the route from the Ofanto bridge (Pons Aufidi) to Venosa. The work added a final piece to the reconstruction of the Via Appia in the Lucanian section, filling a void that has been the subject of extensive discussion since the earliest studies: that of the passage of the road on the Ofanto river. The research starts from two hypotheses and from two bridges. This article sets out to define route on the Santa Venere Bridge.

Abstract

The route of the via Appia between Irpinia and Brindisi is still problematic. This paper presents the reconstruction of the route from the Ofanto bridge (Pons Aufidi) to Venosa. The work added a final piece to the reconstruction of the Via Appia in the Lucanian section, filling a void that has been the subject of extensive discussion since the earliest studies: that of the passage of the road on the Ofanto river. The research starts from two hypotheses and from two bridges. This article sets out to define route on the Santa Venere Bridge.
