Il «caelum», le «tenebrae super abyssum» e il «fiat lux» nel libro XIII delle Confessioni di Agostino

In this paper I examine the interpretation of the images of Gn 1, 1-3 in book XIII of Augustine’s Confessions. First, I analyze the verbal and conceptual links between the images in the biblical text and in the Augustinian interpretation; secondly, I examine the exegetical procedure, in particular regarding the images that refer to the spiritual creature; thirdly, I analyze in the Augustinian text the use of the notions of matter and form with reference to the spiritual creature. In conclusion, in book XIII the two pairs of antithetical images ‘sky’/‘abyss’ and ‘darkness’/‘light’ show the distinction of three states, which cannot be represented with the couple of philosophical notions matter-form.

In questo saggio esamino l’interpretazione delle immagini di Gn 1, 1-3 nel libro XIII delle Confessioni di Agostino. In primo luogo analizzo i nessi verbali e concettuali tra le immagini nel testo biblico e nell’interpretazione agostiniana; In secondo luogo esamino il procedimento esegetico, in particolare per quanto concerne le immagini riferite alla creatura spirituale; in terzo luogo analizzo nel testo agostiniano l’uso delle nozioni di materia e forma con riferimento alla creatura spirituale. In conclusione le due coppie di immagini antitetiche ‘cielo’/‘abisso’ e ‘tenebre’/‘luce’ mostrano nei passi tratti dal libro XIII la distinzione di tre stati, che non possono essere rappresentati con la coppia di nozioni filosofiche materia-forma.
