Abstract

Between 1915 and 1924, the most famous Parisian chanteuse Yvette Guilbert devoted a large part of her strength to the theatrical education of girls. In New York she found a fertile ground to open her school but after only two years she was forced to close it and come back to Paris. Nevertheless the hopes of establishing in Europe her home-school-theater definitively extinguished. By various sources, primary archival and autobiographical, the contribution reconstructs the little-known, although important pedagogical mission of Guilbert. In particular, the article contextualizes the educational models and local influences that inform her school and tries to piece together the networks of women and philanthropists she could have come in touch with, to explaining the reasons for its “failure”.
