The ‘Reden' can be considered a metaphysical foundation of ethics. By questioning the banality of everyday life, Eckhart brings his audience to reflect on the forms of their religious practice in order to become aware of its true meaning. In my opinion the ‘Reden’ do not relate, therefore, to how religion is practised by man (human action?), but rather to the foundation of this practice. My contribution aims to show, that the significant themes of this work are not only ‘obedience' or ‘detachment’ (as is commonly stated OR believed?), but rather the criterion of the discernment between genuinely virtuous and fake virtuous behavior. It is significant, in fact, that in this treaty Eckhart insists repeatedly on the term ’true’: ‘true' obedience (Reden, 189.3, 197.5), ’true' reason (Reden, 207.4), 'true' penitence (Reden, 244.4) and ’true' man (Reden, 226.5), assuming evidently the possibility of inauthentic behavior
