Il cum historicum: un'arma non convenzionale dello schieramento cesariano

Lo studio indaga la natura semantica e la funzione pragmatico-comunicativa del cum historicum nei Commentarii de bello Gallico. Se da una parte nella prosa di Cesare l'uso del cum historicum presenta elementi di ampia regolarità sintattica ed espressiva, tali da farne un tratto caratterizzante dello stile cesariano e uno strumento fortemente connotativo delle modalità espressive dello scrittore, dall'altra infatti non secondarie debolezze nella definizione dello statuto semantico del cum historicum emergono ancora dai risultati della pur ampia ricerca a carattere linguistico-sintattico condotta sull'argomento. Le incertezze nella individuazione univoca dei tratti inerenti alla specificità semantica del cum historicum su base sintattica e frasale si sono fino a oggi riflesse nell'adozione di modalità di traduzione spesso inefficaci a disambiguarne il valore espressivo: tale approccio ha prodotto una sostanziale rinuncia da parte dei traduttori dei Commentarii ad adottare modalità interpretative in grado di fare interagire i caratteri sintattici del costrutto con i più ampi orientamenti di carattere comunicativo e specificamente retorico ad esso sottesi. Le finalità persuasive delle scrittura cesariana, di cui sicura conferma forniscono gli studi più recenti e approfonditi dei Commentarii, hanno inciso peraltro in modo significativo nell'organizzazione discorsiva del testo, determinandone una pluralità di assetti retoricamente impiegati a ottenere l'assenso del destinatario/ interlocutore nei confronti delle scelte politiche e delle azioni militari del generale. Si propone pertanto un allargamento del campo di indagine, che ponga il cum historicum al crocevia di una pluralità di dimensioni di ricerca linguistica: attraverso gli apporti della linguistica testuale, già indicativa di nuove aperture transfrastiche nelle sue fasi iniziali e oggi ancor meglio attrezzata grazie alla prospettiva dell'analisi informazionale, e della linguistica pragmatica, con le sue aperture verso la dimensione argomentativa degli oggetti testuali, si documenta la presenza nell'uso cesariano del cum historicum di una semantica di natura assertiva. Nell'ambito della struttura unitaria costituita dalla subordinata in cum (frase costituente) e dalla sua reggente (frase matrice), il valore semantico attribuibile all'enunciato che da tale integrazione deriva sembra significativamente vicino a quello proprio delle strutture sintattiche in if.....then. Nel mondo testuale che formula le sue premesse e delinea i suoi argumenta nella forma del cum historicum, la forza delle conclusioni, la giustificazione dell'azione sono garantite dal lucido impianto concettuale nel quale Cesare convoglia la narrazione dei fatti: così i Commentarii de bello Gallico si presentano come la straordinaria ri-costruzione logico-argomentativa di una guerra di cui il generale sapeva bene di doversi assumere tutta la responsabilità. Abstract This study investigates the semantic nature and the pragmatic-communicative function of cum historicum in Commentarii de bello Gallico. If on the one hand in Caesar's prose the use of cum historicum presents elements of wide syntactic and expressive regularity, making it a characterised feature from the Caesarian style and a strongly connotative tool of the expressive formalities of the writer, on the other one not secondary weaknesses in the definition of the semantic structure of the cum historicum emerge once again from the results of nevertheless wide syntactic - linguistic research led on this subject. To date the uncertainties in the univocal identification of the features related to the semantic specificity of the cum historicum on a syntactic and phrasal base have been reflected in the adoption of a process of translation often useless to find the Word Sense Disambiguation: such an approach has produced a substantial renunciation from the translators of the Commentarii to adopt interpretative formalities able to make interacting the syntactic characters of the construction with the widest communicative and purposely rhetorical tendencies implied in it. The persuasive aims of Caesar’s writing, the most recent and exhaustive studies of the Commentarii produce a sure confirmation about, have moreover necessarily in the declamatory organization of the text producing many layouts used in a rhetoric way to obtain the assent of the addressee/interlocutor towards the political choices and military actions of the general. We propose therefore a widening of the inquiry, which puts the cum historicum into a multilevel crossroad of the linguistic research: through the contributions of the textual linguistics, which is already indicative about new interclausal openings in its initial phases and today better appointed thanks to the perspective of informational analysis and pragmatics, with its openings towards the dialectic dimension of the textual contents, we provide the presence of an assertive semantics in the Caesarian use of the cum historicum. Within the unitary structure constituted by the subordinate clause in cum (composing phrase) and its main clause, the semantic value attributed to the sentence issued from such an integration seems significantly near to that own of the syntactic structures in if.....then. The clear conceptual structure in which Caesar directs the narration of the events guarantee the strength of the conclusions and the justification of the action in textual linguistics formulating its preambles and outlining its argumenta in the form of the cum historicum: so the Commentarii de bello Gallico are presented as the logical-reasonable extraordinary recreation of a war about the general was aware he had to charge of.
