In Marguerite Yourcenar’s short story the incestuous passion between Miguel and his sister (Anna) seems to recall classical models. The reference to the myth of Biblide and Cauno is unequivocal: Yourcenar seems to prefer Ovid’s version (Metamorphosis 9, 450-665), in particular thinking about the importance she gives to the dream as it be the only place in which an impossible passion could take place.

Abstract

In Marguerite Yourcenar’s short story the incestuous passion between Miguel and his sister (Anna) seems to recall classical models. The reference to the myth of Biblide and Cauno is unequivocal: Yourcenar seems to prefer Ovid’s version (Metamorphosis 9, 450-665), in particular thinking about the importance she gives to the dream as it be the only place in which an impossible passion could take place.
