Abstract

The division of the peninsula in Regiones is undoubtedly the most important intervention Augustan. The description of the Region II - Apulia et Calabria is well made in the words with which you can enter the description of Pliny: ….conectitur secunda regio amplexa Hirpinos, Calabriam, Apuliam, Sallentinos….( Plin. N.H. 3, 99) In this work I wanted to summarize the image of the region in the Augustan age trying to reconstruct the framework of the settlement system. Specifically the actions of Augustus in the main cities of Apulia: Luceria, Venusia, Canusium, Herdonia, Brundisium, Taranto, Lupiae ecc. These interventions are implemented in two phases and different ways. The deductions of the colonies of Octavian define the geopolitics of urbanization Italian before the start of the principality. New settlers are sent in the towns and territories and therefore with a residential building construction requirements related urban and rural. After 27 BC instead will be implemented a new planning policy which is manifested by architectural interventions related ideology propaganda of Augustus, which sees the creation in peripheral contexts of the great plan of monumental transformation started in Rome. Urban trends of those years are entrusted to episodes of qualification monumental urban sectors, adjustment of functional areas and infrastructure, dissemination of monumental complexes sometimes imported directly from Rome, as the great collective buildings, walls, areas of forensic buildings for shows or the bath.
