The inquiry originates from the supposition that the title ho amnos tou Theou is not creation of the evangelist, but it derives from the tradition, probably from the Baptist's ministry, and it wants to define precisely the background of this designation in the light of the theology of the entire fourth Gospel. The most plausible opinion seems to be that the title had for the Baptist an apocalyptic colouring, confirmed by the numerous christological titles of the first chapter of the Gospel, wich nearly all reveal the same apocalyptic basis. It concludes with the suggestion that the extraordinary renown that the title "Lamb" assumed afterwards does not derive from the theology of the fourth Gospel, but it is the mature result of the theological reflection and of the liturgical celebration of all the primitive Church.
