The Gargano National Park represents one of the most significant and complex environmental systems in Europe, characterized by high biodiversity and a wide variety of ecosystems, ranging from the ancient Umbra Forest to the wetlands of Lakes Varano and Lesina, and coastal areas of outstanding natural value. Managing this rich natural heritage requires an integrated approach that balances environmental protection with sustainable development objectives. Within this framework, the Park Authority promotes policies based on sustainable planning, active involvement of local communities, and multi-level institutional cooperation. Research and innovation play a central role, supported through collaboration with universities and research centers. Key activities include biodiversity monitoring, wildfire prevention, sustainable natural resource management, and the assessment of climate change impacts. Several initiatives reflect this commitment, such as the LIFE “Diomedee” project addressing invasive alien species, the installation of sustainable mooring buoy fields in the Tremiti Islands, and the adoption of the European Charter for Sustainable Tourism. Sustainable tourism represents a key driver of local economic development, with particular emphasis on reducing seasonality, enhancing inland areas, and promoting cultural and gastronomic heritage. In this context, theGarganoNational Park functions as a living laboratory for ecological transition, where scientific knowledge, technological innovation, and territorial governance converge to address global challenges and support development models that preserve and enhance natural capital. This work aims to provide policy-relevant insights on how protected areas can be leveraged as strategic platforms for sustainable tourism development, fostering local economies while ensuring the long-term conservation of natural resources.
