Abstract

Sustainable development has become main concern of the modern society. In the conditions of population’s continuous growth, the demand for agri-food products is steadily increasing that is at variance with protection of environment and biodiversity. Certainly, the agriculture sector deals with a number of inefficiencies and constraints including food security and safety, transparency and efficiency problems along supply chains, increasing number of intermediaries and inefficient communication between actors, paper documentations, unqualified human capital, conscious consumers, as well as fraud and counterfeiting. Companies’ ability to overcome abovementioned challenges is in correlation with the innovation transfer in managerial and production strategies. From this point of view, the benefit of Blockchain Technology (BCT) is commonly agreed by academic society, underlining its capability of product traceability and advancement in companies’ sustainable performance. In accordance with this, many businesses started to examine BCT in their activities. This work seeks to highlight the main drivers for BCT adoption in agri-food industry as well as the principal aspects that should be taken into consideration in this process. In order to reach the research aim, the business case of Italian winery Placido Volpone is described. It is a popular method of qualitative analysis on the basis of real occasions and it allows revealing, describing, explaining, evaluating and understanding the phenomenon from multiple sides and within its real-life context. The results of the study encourage researchers and practitioners to comprehend how to adopt the BCT through a business case.
