This paper is focused on the analisy of settlements and cities. This paper proposes the analysis of the process of evolution of dwellings through change or continuity. From indigenous settlements, to Greek colonies, to the Roman city. The research of recent years have witnessed increased interest in roman colonization and previous conceptions of roman colonization have been fundamentally challenged. My particular focus is to present various examples of the investigation conducted in the the adriatic area, Specifically, a very interesting problem regard the settlements of Apulia in the period preceding the arrival of the Romans and the Romanisation of the area. The most notable transformations in the ancient landscape were undoubtedly produced by the Roman intervention that gave birth to the new colonies, and the planning of the new towns which consequently led to the reorganisation of a vast territories and the division of the rural areas into a dense network of small properties assigned to the settlers. Along the Adriatic coast this phenomenon is particularly significant because of the possible comparison with the other side of the sea, where this is always an element of transit and union. Here I analyze many important settlements and city: from indigenous settlements, to the Roman colonies of Apulia to the southernmost Brindisi.
