The Roman baths of the ancient city of Herdonia, located on the via Traiana, 100 m ca. to the NW of the Roman basilica, were partially investigated for the first time in the 1970s by a group of Belgian archaeologist directed by J.Mertens. In 1997, 1998 and 2000 new extensive excavations were carried out that focused on a wider area encompassing the southern part of the building discovered in 1972 by the Belgian team. This new investigation has taken into account and merges the results of both the new and the past excavations. The amount of available data, the architectural analysis of the building and comparisons with similar baths at other sites provide us with the possibility of obtaining a new plan of the building and developing new hypotheses about its functioning.

Abstract
The Roman baths of the ancient city of Herdonia, located on the via Traiana, 100 m ca. to the NW of the Roman basilica, were partially investigated for the first time in the 1970s by a group of Belgian archaeologist directed by J.Mertens. In 1997, 1998 and 2000 new extensive excavations were carried out that focused on a wider area encompassing the southern part of the building discovered in 1972 by the Belgian team. This new investigation has taken into account and merges the results of both the new and the past excavations. The amount of available data, the architectural analysis of the building and comparisons with similar baths at other sites provide us with the possibility of obtaining a new plan of the building and developing new hypotheses about its functioning.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
