Producers Organisations (PO) are, to date, one of the main tools that sectoral policies identified to increase the competitive advantage of farms. The theme of the aggregation of producers, whether territorial or functional, plays a decisive role in the scientific debate, political and technical support for the development of modern agriculture. The preface to this volume introduces the main features that give such importance to PO: from the policy context in which POs were born and have established themselves, stressing the role that they play within branches food especially for the benefit of the production steps; as part of the agricultural extension services; for the development of the territories and, in general, in the processes of local development.

Abstract
