Antonio Gramsci (1891-1937) was an Italian philosopher, journalist, linguist and political sociologist, who spent eleven years in fascist prisons because of his membership in the Italian communist party which he founded and led until his death. He is considered one of the 20th century’s greatest Marxist thinkers mainly thanks to his Prison Notebooks, a monumental work consisting of more than 30 notebooks, written in prison between 1929 and 1935. His concepts have strongly influenced modern critical sociology, political theory, social anthropology and linguistics. He uses interdisciplinary sources, reflecting meticulously on European and Italian history, the concept of revolution, the role of civil society, Fordism, popular culture and folklore.
