Abstract

Specific place to see, the theatron is forced to tackle the problem od 'seen' (the novelty and specificity of theater), of the 'unseen' (visible only with the help of show-machines), and of 'not to be seen'. The question was of how to 'hide' what is forbidden to see. As ancient source already pointed out, among the most effective tricks there were 'noises' replacing the raw scene and the ekphraseis often by th Choir. Noised and ekphraseis were 'visual' euphemisms, a new type to add to 'verbal' ones. The tragic poet has the duty to hide the poneron, as Aeschylus says in Aristophanes (Frogs 1053).
