Abstract

Between 1812 and 1813 Aubin Louis Millin (1759-1818), at that time a significant representative of French culture, director of Magasin encyclopédique and expert on natural history and history of ancient art, crossed the south of Italy. He made known the excavations of the Canosa tombs, the description of which he published in 1816 and took note of monuments and inscriptions in his travel notes, unpublished and preserved in Paris at the Bibliothèque de l’Arsenal. In particular, in Canosa he was able to see, still intact, two inscriptions: one, unpublished, attests the name of the gens Tagullia, the other, partially walled at the time of Mommsen’s first visit in 1846 (CIL, IX 375 = ERC 126), preserves, as described by Millin, the gentilitial names of Apronius and Calvisius.
