Forward: Improving English in the ward is a 30 minute DVD film shot in colour. A patient arrives at the Pronto Soccorso (Accidents and Emergency) of an Italian hospital with a serious heart condition which in the Italian classification system is a “Code Yellow” and which like “Code Red” has absolute priority over other cases. The doctors apply first aid complying with internationally-agreed protocols for cardio-pulmonary resuscitation. The film is shot, under the authors’ direction, in a hospital in which communicative and pragmatic features enact basic notions of medical theory and clinical practice as they apply to the case at hand. The film addresses the needs of undergraduate students in the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery as well as healthcare workers who wish to improve their Medical English in a dynamic context. Produced by DLP Network. The film comes with computer-accessible slides which progressively expand the thematic content presented in the film.
