In Cassius Dio’s History of Rome the orations of Cicero and Calenus represent a vivid description of the political conflict at the end of Roman Republic. Dio aims at criticizing Cicero’s fight against Antony and in general the political behaviour of the Roman orator. Cassius Dio’s Ciceronian oration depends on Ciceronian Philippics, whereas Calenus’ answer collects the wthole anti-ciceronian tradition, which is examined in the appendix.
