Extinction spectra of submicronic amorphous carbon grains in the wavelength range 100-800 nm are presented. A few new structures are observed between 140-180 nm beside the band at 240 nm usually attributed to a surface plasmon resonance. The new features are explained as absorption structures on the low energy tail of the main interband electronic transitions. The observed shift of the energy position of all bands is in agreement with the size effect calculated for small solid particles.

Abstract

Extinction spectra of submicronic amorphous carbon grains in the wavelength range 100-800 nm are presented. A few new structures are observed between 140-180 nm beside the band at 240 nm usually attributed to a surface plasmon resonance. The new features are explained as absorption structures on the low energy tail of the main interband electronic transitions. The observed shift of the energy position of all bands is in agreement with the size effect calculated for small solid particles.
