This article emphasizes the benefits and the health risks due to the use and abuse of caffeine in the sportive activities. The effects of caffeine on exercise performance have been well documented, with most reviews focusing on the metabolic, hormonal, and/or central nervous system effects. Caffeine affects also ventilation and cardiovascular functions. Although an upper urinary concentration limit exists for caffeine with international sports doping control agencies, caffeine's universal accessibility in the marketplace has made the caffeine widely considered as good ergogenic substance for sport and exercise. The risk of excessive doses of caffeine, an important component of many beverages, it is sometimes overlooked in programs of health education for athletes. © 2012 Nova Science Publishers, Inc.
