Abstract

One of the geopolitical issues that raises more discussions in Europe, is on whether or not to accept Turkey into the Union. The issue of integration of Turkey into the Eu¬ropean Union offers at least three keys to that investigation: the religious/identitarian, the humanitarian and the geopolitical. The perspective from which this research fol¬lows is the religious/identitarian, particularly current since it has been called by recent controversy arose in the European Constitution and the political-philosophical debate on the (alleged) change from secular to post-secular age, which is affecting Europe. Turkey is knocking at the doors of the European Union since 1963, but the debate about the response to its request admission is surrounded by a considerable emo¬tional charge. Thus, the economic, demographic, financial and immigration, though important, are secondary to the basic problem, which is of a religious nature. What kind of Islam would come to Europe with Turkey? Should the fact that an Islamic-inspired party has won the elections of 2002 warry the Europeans? How does the electoral success of political Islam coexists with the Turkish secularism? How does it manifest religiosity in Turkey? What forms takes the Islamic culture from the perspec¬tive of admission to Europe? This project will seek to answer these questions, believ¬ing that the answers could provide a significant contribution to both the constitution of a secular Europe as a reflection on the link to religion and secularism, through cultural reappropriation, material crossbreeding and its symbolic dislocation.
