The objective of this work was to assess the changes in soil salinity and the yield response of artichoke (cv. Violetto) irrigated with different brackish water volumes. A field trial was carried out in Southern Italy (area of Cerignola – FG), in the two-year period ’98-’99, on a clay soil, using irrigation water of electrical conductivity ranging from 3 to 3.5 dS m-1. Two different watering volumes (corresponding to ETc and 1.2 ETc) were applied by micro-irrigation whenever the crop had lost 30 mm of ETc. For both treatments, soil samples were periodically taken from a soil profile depth of 40 cm to assess the variations in the saturation extract electrical conductivity (ECe) through the cropping cycles. The results obtained show consistent changes in the ECe over time; it was relatively low at the crop resumption stage, it increased during the irrigation season and then decreased due to the leaching action of winter rainfall. As to the yield response, the crop irrigated with the highest watering volume showed, in both years, a very slight increase in the number of produced heads, significant only in the first year.
