PROSPECTS OF BIO-HYDROGEN PRODUCTION *Valeria Spada , **Maria Dipaola Dipartimento di Scienze Economico-Aziendali - Università di Foggia, Via Caggese 1, I - 71100 Foggia *+390881781706, v.spada@unifg.it; **+393203605278, m.dipaola@unifg.it. ABSTRACT: Scientific and technological research seems to aim at initiating a real energy revolution, which should involve energy source diversification and the exploration of new energy carriers, as well as the reduction of air pollution. In such a context, bio-fuels from biomass could, in a short to middle term, represent an effective alternative to fossil fuels and be directly used in transport. This very energy intensive sector, is currently considered to be responsible for 21% of CO2 global emissions. By 2030 transport energy demand is expected to reach 3.2 Gtoe (compared to the current 1.9 Gtoe), absorbing nearly 54% of total oil demand. The present paper intends to offer an analysis of the current situation and perspectives concerning hydrogen production from biomass, in order to have an energy carrier from renewable raw materials, being both available on territory and CO2 neutral. Moreover, production carried out in controlled conditions, integrating such systems with CO2 sequestration methodologies, would allow a further reduction of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere, thus becoming a source of carbon credits. All this may contribute to realizing a sustainable energy future. Keywords: Hydrogen, Biomass resources, Sustainable use of biomass
