Abstract

All tyres annually disposed worldwide can represent a real source of energy or secondary raw materials to use in different industrial applications. The European Directive (1999/31/CE) that forbid all european member countries to land dispose tyres, lead to the development of alternative uses like the production of recycled tyre rubber granulate to use as infill material in artificial football turf. However, in Italy, the potential risk for human health and environment announced by some national football associations led to carry out several long term studies in order to exclude this possibility.
